Bass-baritone Jared Werlein, hailing from California’s Bay Area, is an accomplished recipient of the American Opera Foundation Scholarship. This prestigious award facilitated his engagement with Deutsche Oper Berlin for the 2024-25 season, during which he showcased his versatility in over 15 roles. Notable performances included Harasta in The Cunning Little Vixen, Zuniga in Carmen, and Sciarrone in Tosca. Additionally, Mr. Werlein marked his Asian debut with the Korean National Opera, portraying Ashby in La Fanciulla del West.

Throughout his career, Mr. Werlein has enriched his artistry through participation in several esteemed Young Artist Programs. In 2024, he joined the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, where he served as cover for Don Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Achilla in Giulio Cesare. The previous year, he attended the Music Academy of the West, delivering compelling performances as Benoit and Alcindoro in La Bohème. His tenure with the Chautauqua Opera Conservatory across the 2018, 2019, and 2022 seasons further distinguished his repertoire, with standout roles such as Leporello in Don Giovanni, Peter Quince in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Bellomy in Harvey Schmidt’s The Fantasticks.

A proud alumnus of The Juilliard School, Mr. Werlein earned both his Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in voice. During his time there, he graced the stage in significant roles, including Gus O’Neill in John Musto’s Later That Same Evening, Mercurio in Handel’s Atalanta, and Nanni in Haydn’s L'Infedeltà Delusa. He also served as cover for Sodbuster in Missy Mazzoli’s Proving Up.

Looking ahead, Mr. Werlein is set to rejoin Deutsche Oper Berlin as an ensemble member for the upcoming season, further solidifying his burgeoning stature on the international opera scene.
