About Jared Mac Werlein

Biography

Bass-baritone Jared Mac Werlein, a native of the Bay Area, California, is a distinguished recipient of the American Opera Foundation scholarship, which enabled him to join Deutsche Oper Berlin for their 24/25 season. While there, he performed in over 16 roles, including Harasta in The Cunning Little Vixen, Zuniga in Carmen, and Sciarrone in Tosca. Additionally, Mr. Werlein made his Korean debut with the Korean National Opera as Ashby in La Fanciulla del West.


Mr. Werlein has participated in numerous prestigious Young Artist Programs in recent years. In 2024, he joined the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, where he covered the roles of Don Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Achilla in Giulio Cesare. In 2023, he attended the Music Academy of the West, performing the roles of Benoit and Alcindoro in La Bohème. He was also involved with the Chautauqua Opera Conservatory during their 2018, 2019, and 2022 seasons, portraying notable characters such as Leporello in Don Giovanni, Peter Quince in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Bellomy in Harvey Schmidt’s The Fantasticks.


A graduate of The Juilliard School, Mr. Werlein holds both his Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in voice. During his studies, he performed key roles in a variety of productions, including Gus O’Neill in John Musto’s Later That Same Evening, Mercurio in Handel’s Atalanta, and Nanni in Haydn’s L'Infedeltà Delusa. He also covered the role of Sodbuster in Missy Mazzoli’s Proving Up.


This season, Mr. Werlein will be returning to Deutsche Oper Berlin as an official member of their ensemble. Some notable roles include Bartolo in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, Der König in Schecker's Der Schatzgräber, Peter Quince in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Curio in Handel's Giulio Cesare.
